Why And How To Recycle Batteries, Cars and Tires ?

Cars, whether on or off the road, require careful handling. Off the road doesn't mean inside the garage; here we are talking about certain environmental implications that need to be followed before heading the junkyard and contributing to the noble notion of car recycling. The most vital issue for the environment is to recycle batteries correctly.

Cars that have went past their expected lifespan and beyond normal functionality get sold either as a whole or in parts; while a complete car can be restored and reconditioned, this is not often the case with the parts. One of them is definitely the car battery. To recycle batteries from old cars properly the acid from those lead-acid batteries has to be neutralized before the lead can be separated from the polymers. The other car parts need to be determined for an effective recycling. Once that's done, it is time to clean them up for minimizing the years of sludge buildup leaching into the environment. This includes all the solids, liquids and gaseous materials borne from petroleum and other petro-based lubricants.

The scrap yards for car recycling reduces the used cars to solid metal, which is then used for creating new metallic items; this is a way to keep prices low for new items, since it saves the cost of digging up the ores and processing charges. However, it is also mandatory that the car to be recycled has become legally free of any legal bindings including a full repayment of the car loan.

In Europe, the laws for car recycling made it compulsory to recycle at least 85 % of a vehicle's components; 5 % of the total goes into energy production and the rest are to be dumped of safely for avoiding soil contamination, saving raw materials and energy. Recycling metals, on an average, requires around 25% of the energy than manufacturing new steel (source: EPA); as a result, prices come down considerably, which reflects upon the new car prices. So far, about a fourth of all steel manufactured today owes to car recycling or metal recycling and around 15% of all products is recycled steel.

Effective Car Recycling Needs Specialized Recycling Stations

However, effective car recycling is not for every recycling station; the good ones classify and decontaminate every car part before the breaking up begins. Plastic pieces and rubber, the battery and the oils/ other liquids are separated first and then, the gases (chiefly CFC). These are responsible for the heavy contamination of the environment and are dealt with by companies authorized for tire recycling, plastic recycling, batteries recycling etc. For example, during tire recycling the old tires are shredded into materials, which are finally used as a granulate material for road construction or into other materials, which are used to manufacture various recycled plastic products.

The metal parts are recycled and are used to make new cars/parts or other utensils made from metal. However, used spare parts also find use in developing nations and parts like the starter motors or the alternators for nearly all car models find a way out there. Apart from receiving environmental benefits, recycling cars is a boost to the country's economy and while indirectly, the practice is also supposed to benefit the global industrial infrastructure.
